He technically is correct in saying that it is 8 cores. It's 4 physical cores that are hyper threaded. Giving it 8 logical cores. But it could have been worded better. Only AMD has an 8 physical core processor. They even have a 16 core server processor for cloud computing.

even the amd cores are kinda bull shit, but way more real than intel. With intel, they are logical cpus only

LIES! FUCKING LIES!

if you got that quote i tip my hat to you....

intel has 8 core cpu's. It's called 2011 xeons. AND 16 core 32 logical when you get an srx from evga that supports 2x 8core 16 thread xeons.

That wouldn't be a 16 core CPU, that's two eight cores. Multi-CPU systems have been around for decades, I think Jody has a dual Pentium Pro board lying around, they're irrelevant to the topic.

Also, I thought Intel never actually shipped any of those chips - or stopped making them or something. AMD has production equipment using 8 cores and have always been further ahead in multicore tech and design. The chips are just significantly less powerful than modern Intels.

I have several multi cpu systems. And intel did make/ship those cpu's i know someone who has an asus dual 2011 board with 4x 7970's that he uses for distributed computing. an intel 2687 xeon costs $1500 though. they are not that main stream. look up the evga srx.

Those are discontinued as well, saw new bins up on Ark that were launched end of last year so they're still making them. That doesn't say anything to availablility but you're right, they're still shipping 8 core models. Shouldn't be a surprise I suppose, but they're quicker to the party than I had figured.

And yah, the workstation stuff has always been overpriced like that, $1500 is the low end of what I saw on Ark. Workstations are a euphemism for "take my money, I need this to sound expensive", there is a very thin number of tasks that require that kind of horsepower but don't work better in a distributed model.
