it depends, there are two kinds of prices
sometimes sponosors like Intel and nVidea send over a graphics card or CPU as loot
sometimes they send over keyboard dusters

so those prizes are free
there are also the kind where you go and buy something with the proceeds and it is won, which lowers profit and makes fees go up

I would rather pay a lower fee and have a chance at winning a keyboard duster, than pay a higher fee and have a chance at winning something the organizers paid for. Both scenarios only give me a "chance" at winning. Add to that the fact that I LAN for fun, not prizes, and I think you see where I am going with this.

I was just talking about the two kinds
I personally am against the latter, as that money could be better spent on upgrading to GigE or something that benefits everyone rather than one random person

Yeah, we used to spend our money on prizes to bring people. Now Intel sends us some stuff every couple LAN's, and we are trying to gather money for servers and whatnot.

Take your 'merger' LAN and shove it where the sun don't shine

It was meant to be a merger lan, but then we ended up with a space smaller than our non-merger lan, witch made it impossible to call a merger lan
