I might take those raptors off of your hand and offer a cash + trade hard drive if you were at all interested..

Why spend the huge premium for the apple badge? Duplicate the mac pro with equivalent PC components and install macOS hackintosh edition if you really want to use it. Would be far cheaper.

Hmmm... Didn't consider this. That amount included the 23" Cinema HD Display. Is there something special about that display that makes it that price? Also, I didn't realize you could run OS X on a non mac system, isn't there something in the MOBO bios preventing people from running it? Is the mobo used by apple something special?
Thx for the input guys.

There's h4xd versions of OSX that will install on any recent x86 machine. You just need to make sure you use compatible hardware.

Mind you, this won't do much good if the machine is for work and you need legit (ie paid for) version of OSX.

The macbooks use the same hardware, to my knowledge the only difference is flashes something other than an emulated bios to the motherboard firmware which the OS looks for. The hacked versions probably just emulate the firmware.
But yah, it's literally the same hardware as most other notebooks nowadays, simply a lot more money because it's Apple branded.

He's looking for a mac pro, not a macbook pro.r337ard wrote:The macbooks use the same hardware

Yah, didn't read.
Still, it's likely just this board in a fancy pants case:

BTW, that's a pretty sweet motherboard you might say.

Monitor: There's nothing "special" about Apple monitors, they are good monitors but overpriced IMHO. Tony, I'd say don't bother getting an Apple monitor, there's plenty of other selection out there for cheaper.
Hackintosh vs Apple branded: Your choice comes down to this:
A) Pay the premium for Apple hardware and have a working machine out of the box, and a reliable machine into the future.
B) Use existing hardware, and spend time getting it working, plus extra time in the future as inevitable incompatibilities crop up.
I've thought about building my own custom mac, but IMHO, it's not worth the time and stress when I need a machine I can depend upon every day.

Lucid is very correct.
Some of the rumour mill items I have heard is Mac is also looking at breaking hackintosh with updates.
So you will have a constant battle on your hand.
Nothing special about the monitor I agree.
Nothing special about the hardware, but it is sure damn stylish and... it works as lucid also pointed out.
It is something similar to Sat... I did FTA for a while... while it was nice and cheaper... constant pain to work properly (HD Stuff that is) and when they (Sat provider) sent down code to break shit.... always at the most inconvenient time, now I have never had an issue with my 9200 legit unit I even got a second one last week.

It's also somewhat similar to running mexican Windows. They try to break it with pretty much every service pack, so if you want to pirate it's going to be a little more hassle. But (many moons ago) when we previewed it it didn't seem hard to get working at all, and that was without 'proper' hardware.JohnyRico wrote:Lucid is very correct.

IMO buying Apple is like buying Alienware. They're slick cases, and guaranteed to work overclocks, but pricey as hell when you look at what you could get for the money (and overclock yourself with minimal hassle). It also, in my eyes, reflects poorly on Apple that they simply refuse to sell their OS without taking you to the cleaners on the hardware. 'User Experience' my ass, they just want to go to sleep on a pile of your money.

Re: Might need to sell my comp system guys.. Price check?
But you aren't technically pirating OSX, I mean you can buy it stand alone... and be legit, but Apple won't let people install it on their choice of hardware.
I think Apple should allow it. and Only provide technical support to "Apple Serial Numbered" hardware.
And not try and break hackintoshes.
ah well.

Re: Might need to sell my comp system guys.. Price check?
Though if you have a pure Macintosh and say something breaks, the Apple support system is not the greatest in the world. The support system runs under the fundamentals of most Tier 1 PC providers, in which you have to obey the following rules:
1. Parts replacement: You must send the defective part to Apple if it is to be swapped out. If you don't, the part can cost you in hundreds, and Apple charges in the hundreds for their Pioneer DVDRW's. You can buy the same drive for 1/3 the cost and swap it out. I've done it on a G5, so it's not entirely debatable.
2. System Repair: If the system requires repair due to eg: Faulty motherboard, you have to locate an ASP (Authorized Service Provider) to repair the system. If you live out in Bumf**k, Alberta, it is not easy to find one. CompuSmart was one of the few places to repair them, and Westworld is a fricken gong-show. If Apple determines that your system was not repaired properly, they will basically flat-out void your warranty till it is done properly.
** This is my experience with the G5's, Apple may have changed this after the release of the Intel x86 Macs.
As for the hardware inside a Mac, the one key difference between a hacked version and a true version is BIOS versus EFI. There is no BIOS on a Mac, and all the technology in hardware form is the same. PCI-Express, PCI, SATA, 1394, and USB are all part of the Hackintoshes and true Mac's. The O/S... well the O/S is BSD, something runs on nearly any processor architecture in existance eg: Motorola PowerPC, Intel x86, Intel Itanium, MIPS, etc. BSD's hardware support is lacking, but if you buy a system that has the same processor, chipset, graphics, NIC, and sound as a true Mac, theoretically there should be no issues with compatibility.
Apple is in the business to make money off of their hardware, not their software. There was a time that Clone Macs like the Umax SuperMac, Power Computings' PowerTower, and the Motorola StarMax were out there and working just as well as the real thing. The only thing that stopped them was Apple's bitching of profit losses.

I never had a problem with Westworld, and always found Compusmart a gong show.
Go Figure...
Another "Authorized Repair" dealer is "My Mac Dealer" which is on the south side just south of White Ave and on Cowtown Trail.
I had my dealings with Westworld and Compusmart for macs when I was a IT manager at a company that had a Web/Graphic department, which was about 4 years ago now.
I still deal with Westworld for other things now, MAC related obviously, and still have no issues with them.

We share space with a Mac dealer called MacCentric. Good people. I always see customers furious with Westworld come into MacCentric.
